Kit Preview : 1/76 Cromwell Combat Ready sFH18 gun in towing position and early Sdfz7 tractor
About the manufacturer
Cromwell now focuses on 1/76 and 1/72 Combat ready models which combine a reduced count of parts and a good level of detail. Older kit type models are still available, mostly on Ebay. I find Cromwell castings to be among the best on the market.
About the vehicle
The Kraus Maffei (KM) m8 half-track is the early model SDKfz 7 from the mid thirties. It was replaced by the KMm11 as modeled by Airfix in the classic 88 Flak gun and tractor kit.
One photo of the KMm8 at Military-Photos inthe Krauss-Maffei section.
The 15cm SFH 18 was the standard divisional German heavy gun throughout WW2. It was equivalent in range and punch to the British 140mm 5.5in medium gun but totally outranged by other heavy guns such as the US 155mm Long Tom or the Soviet 152mm ML20.
More information on the gun at Wikipedia.
About the kit
The gun is modeled in the towed position and it would be major surgery to change it to a firing positon. Better to buy the Milicast kit if that is what's needed. All details seem to be there albeit molded on. The handwheels could use some thinning or be replaced. The tractor needs some detailing like width indicators, a front bumper but looks good as is.
