Kit Preview : 1/76 Cromwell M10 Tank Destroyer early model

About the manufacturer
Cromwell now focuses on 1/76 and 1/72 Combat ready models which combine a reduced count of parts and a good level of detail. Older kit type models are still available, mostly on Ebay. I find Cromwell castings to be among the best on the market.

About the vehicle
The M10 tank destroyer was the embodiment of the US doctrine that tanks were not to be engaged by tanks but by quick, lightly armored tank destroyers equiped with large antitank guns. Reality showed that the best counter to a tank was another tank and the TD force concept did not survive the war. The M10 carries a specific body and open top turret with a 3inch gun on a M4A2 chassis. There were several types of counterweights at the rear of the turret.

About the kit
This a very nice three piece kit with a gun, turret and a one piece everything else. The gun is warped and is best replaced. The casting for the turret and hull are very good, save for the solid block underside which is a pain to remove. More recent castings do not have this. As for most Cromwell tanks the tracks are undersize as the side by side shot with the old Aifix M4 shows.
