Kit Preview : 1/76 MMS A9 Close Support
About the manufacturer
MMS is the leading 1/76 white metal model brand. The quality of casting and level of detail are comparable to traditional plastic kits, albeit without etched metal detailing. Smaller details such as mirrors are often omitted , and the running gear of tracked vehicles is usually a simplified one piece casting where the guide teeth are backed by a solid metal strengthening strip.
Due to the tight packaging in unprotected plastic bags, parts often come bent or one might say, with pre-built battle damage. Care must be taken to straighten things out lest parts be broken.
About the vehicle
The A9 was an early war British cruiser tank. Ligtly armored (only 14mm) and mechanically unreliable, it was not a success. It saw service with the BEF and in the early Notrh African battles. The tank was armed with 3 Vickers MGs (1 coax and 2 in the auxiliary turrets) and a 2pounder gun. The gun only fired armor piercing shot so was supplemented with a close support version mounting a 3.7inch howitzer.
About the kit
The kit is the same as the A9 gun tank with a different turret and gun. It also shares the track/running gear of the A10 model. The two desert shields need straightening and seem a bit thick. I saw a 1/35 build review stating that only one shield was worn, on the left side.
The hatches come in open and closed positions.
Overall a very nice kit. It will look good in caunter camouflage.
