Kit Preview : 1/76 Matchbox JagdPanzer IV L/70 Vomag version

About the manufacturer
Matchbox released several ranges 1/76 armor kits in the seventies and eighties. They were characterized by their interesting choice of subject and use of two color plastic. Much of the range is being re-released by Revell (in single color plastic) and this kit is currently on the market (2007).

About the vehicle
This is the Vomag version of the later JagdPanzer IV, mating the Panther's long 7.5cm gun with a Panzer IV chassis. The gun was too heavy so the vehicle was extremely nose heavy. The muzzle brake was not used, lest it touch the ground when the vehicle dipped. The 2 front wheels on each side were replaced with steel ones to better cope with the extra load. They fought in the tank destroyer sections of Panxer divisions in the final battles of the war on all fronts.

About the kit
This is one of the later Matchbox kits and was the first small scale model of the the JagpPanzer IV.

Both version shown are from 1945 so the absence of Zimmerit on the model should be OK.

My only criticism here would be that the idler wheels should be of the welded type with grooved spokes, but that is a minor concern. I'm sure there should be more tools stowed on the model but I'm no specialist of this vehicle.

In summary, it looks like a neat little kit, which should look great with some detailing. I haven't compared its size relative to the Vacucast models.
